What Can Volunteers Do?

There are lots of roles which Volunteers can do. There is literally something for everyone, if you like to get stuck into the action or would prefer a back room role - we can cater for everyone. You will need to be flexible, as with all well laid plans - sometimes they are altered! The weather is normalyl to blame!

The table below shows the list of roles that are available and on which days. Take a look, se what grabs your attention and then sign up - Simple.

Construction

This role is fairly physical and will involve working outdoors with our construction crew. You will mainly be helping to put up the marquees and help build the IRONMAN UK Village. This role will suit someone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and working as part of a team.

Regsitration Set Up

You will be assisting the Volunteer Captain in setting up the tables and the layout of the marquee for registration. Everything needs to be in place for the athletes who will arrive on Thursday

Registration

Registration is the first place all the athletes will go when they arrive. You will be required to Register the athletes, and hand them their Race Numbers and transition bags. This is normally a busy and fun place to work.

Transition Set Up

Transition is where is all happens, so your role here will be to ensure, with the Transition Captain that all is set up for the athletes before they check their equipment in. This role will envolve some lifting and shifting of tables and equipment and laying out Numbers.

Transition Check In

Transition is a very busy place over Race Weekend, you will be helping athletes rack their bags and bikes and find the correct hooks for their kit.

Practice Swim
Check In

Athletes who wish to swim in the lake before Race Day are able to do so at the Practice Swim. You will need to Check all the athlets in and out of the water.

Pasta Party The Pasta Party is the traditional carbo loading party before the race. All athletes are able to attend as long as they have requested a ticket. You will need to help the Volunteer Captain set up the room for the Pasta Party. When all the athletes start to arrive you will also help with checking tickets and showing them to their seats. After all the festivities are over you will need to assist with clearing the venue. Friday

Commentator Assistant

This job wil envolve shaddowing the Commentators, taking updates from the radios and passing them on to the Commentators. You will need to be a very organised person being able to work under pressure and keep track of paper work. You will be on your feet for most of the day so you will need to be fairly fit.

Transition Race Day

Transition is where it all happens on Race Day. The athletes will pass through here at least three times during the Race, and they need a great team of Voluneers to help them find their kit and re-rack the bags once they have left. You will be on the go most of the day - but it is the best place to be on race day!

Bodymarkers This role will actually let you get your hands on the athletes! All the athletes have to have their race number and age group marked on their arms and legs at the start of the race. Sunday

Canoeist If you own a canoe and would like to help the water safety crew look after the athletes then this could be for you. Sunday

05:30-09:00

Swim Exit Helper

As the swimmers exit the water most of them will need a helping hand as they get out. You will be there to help pull them out of the waterm you will get very wet doing this job and will need your own wetsuit.

Wetsuit Stripper

Athletes that make it out of the water generally need a bit of help as they run up to transition undoing their wetsuits, and once in transition; help pulling them off. This is another role where you will need to be physically fit and also not mind getting wet!

Bike Marshal

There are various positions around the course where Bike Marshals are needed. Your own transport is an advantage. If you choose to Bike Marshal your details will be passed onto your Cheif Road Marshal, who then take over coordinating you.

Run Marshal

Although the Run Course is signed we still need marshalls on the course to make sure that athletes do not go wrong and to stop the public walking across the route when athletes are coming.

Bike Catcher

This role will suit energetic people, who are not affraid to make themselves heard. You will be taking the bikes from the Competitors as they enter Transition and rack the bike over the competitors number.

Medical IRONMAN UK always need volunteer medical staff, from first aiders, to doctors and paramedics. If you are qualified and would like to use your skills in a challenging environment, or would like to gain experience in Sport Event medicine then this could be a great opportunity.

Sports Massage

We are looking for masseurs to give pre and post race massage to our Competitors. If you Volunteer for this role your detials will be passed on to our Massage Coordinator and he will make arrangements with you.

Finish Line Helper (FULL)

The Finish Line is where everyone wants to be, but it is not all glamour. Here you will undertake various duties such as removing timing chips, handing our t-shirts and helping athletes to the Food area and to Medical.

Awards Ceremony All athletes that book their tickets for the Awards Ceremony, are entitled to attend. Before all the athletes arrive you will need to assist the Volunteer Captain set up the room, and then check the tickets of athletes as they arrive and show them to their seats. Once the Ceremony is over you will then need to help with the clear up. Monday

10:30-15:00

Clear Up

Even before all the athletes have finished, there are areas of the Village that need to be packed away, such as Registration, the site also needs to be clear of litter before we leave. This role will also envolve some lifting and taking down of marquees,so you will need to fairly strong and fit.
